Stained glass – not just for church windows anymore
Artist Brian Clarke (b. 1953, England) applies pointillism to stained glass. “Studies for Caryatids” (2002) also known as “Miami Beach Boys”, are 7 larger-than-life free-standing glass panels based on photographs of Speedo-clad males on Miami Beach.
“I really wanted to leave any traditional ideas of what stained glass is behind me through these works. I felt youth and dynamism needed to be injected into the medium.” - Brian Clarke
Detail: Three panels are fused together. Each a single color: one yellow, another black, a third blue. The tiny dots are painted on and then fired into the glass. Detail photo by architectural photographer Loren Brand.
Earlier this year Clarke was knighted for his services to the arts, becoming the first artist working in stained glass to receive the award.

BTW: Your blogger is curious about the name for this series. The term "caryatid" applies to a FEMALE figure serving as an architectural support. A male version is rightly called an Atlas, Atlantid or Telamon. These panels are neither female nor architectural supports. Go figure.
