Epic sportsmanship
The fair play gesture of the year
At the Santander Triathlon (north coast of Spain) on September 13, James Teagle (Great Britain) missed a turn and ran into the fence just yards before the finish line. Diego Mentrida (Spain) passed him, then stopped to wait for Teagle to catch up. Said Diego, "He was in front of me the whole race, so he deserved to beat me" This gesture of good sportsmanship cost Diego a place on the podium, since he surrendered his third place position to James. Speaking on the phone a short time later, Diego's parents told him he did the right thing and that they were proud of him. Diego studies sports science and physical therapy in Madrid.
