Robbie Rogers
Openly gay soccer star retires,
Then marries same-sex partner
In 2013 California native Robbie Rogers (b. 1987) became the first openly gay man to compete in a top North American professional sports league when he signed with the Los Angeles Galaxy team. Unfortunately, last month, at age 30, he had to retire from the sport because of injuries that caused him to miss the entire 2017 season.
But there is good news. Last weekend Robbie married film and television writer/producer Greg Berlanti (Dawson's Creek, Riverdale, Green Lantern). The couple had been dating since 2013, and on February 18, 2016, they welcomed their first son, Caleb, via surrogacy. Last New Year's Eve they announced their engagement, and their wedding ceremony took place a week ago on Saturday, December 2.
