Olympic swimmer Amini Fonua


Openly gay Olympic swimmer Amini Fonua (b. 1989) was included in OUT Magazine’s annual OUT100 list published earlier this month. Fonua, who holds dual citizenship for Tonga and New Zealand, was born in New Zealand to a Tongan father 
and British mother. 
He was a brave, out swimmer while at Texas A&M, but more importantly Fonua was the first Tongan swimmer to win a gold medal in international competition and was the flag bearer for that nation at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. 


While competing in the 2015 Pacific Games he became the first Tongan athlete ever to win 3 gold medals. Fonua’s outspoken criticism of the Daily Beast’s published outing of Olympic athletes during the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro
was instrumental in having the post taken down,
although the damage had already been done.
