Gay Men Now Allowed to Donate Blood
Our nation's 32-year-old ban on blood donations from gay and bisexual men was lifted yesterday, but a one year abstinence from same-sex acts still limits who can give blood. The FDA lifetime ban has been replaced with a policy barring donations from men who have had sex with another man at any time during the previous year. While certainly a step in the right direction, this new policy has been criticized by gay rights activists, who say it falls short of equality.
David Stacy of the Human Rights Campaign, the largest U.S. gay rights group, said, "It simply cannot be justified in light of current scientific research and updated blood screening technology. It continues to stigmatize gay and bisexual men." Dr. Peter Marks of the FDA said the change is "backed by sound scientific evidence" and will "continue to protect our blood supply." It is estimated that the new policy will produce more than 300,000 additional pints into our blood supply system annually.
