Costs of Car Restoration
For Victim of Hate Crimes
Welcome to the bigoted south. Virginia college sophomore Jordan Addison was traumatized when his car was vandalized with anti gay slurs while it was parked in his driveway last March. He drove the car onto campus, only to become the victim of three more incidents of vandalism. Last week he returned to campus in a repaired and tricked-out car that had been restored and customized by a collective effort of ten businesses in the Roanoke area. Junior Henegar of Quality Paint and Body led the restoration project, which cost more than $10,000 – all donated by the businesses involved.
Addison’s Volkswagen now has new tires, a new windshield and a new paint job, along with an awesome new sound system, tinted windows and a new security system. The slashed tires, smashed windshield and gay slurs keyed into the paint – the results of four separate incidents of hate crimes – are things of the past.
An E-mail circulating around the campus of Radford University ended up in the in-box of Junior Henegar, as the result of a female friend of his who heard about the classmates’ call for help. Thanks to Henegar’s efforts, Jordan was presented with a car better than it had been before the hate crimes – at no cost to Jordan. The business community showed Jordan that he is not alone in standing up to anti-gay bullying. Henegar plans to meet with the deans at Radford University to discuss the need for security cameras in campus parking lots to help assure that vandals will not strike again.
Producers of The Ellen DeGeneres Show invited Junior Henegar and Jordan Addison to a taping in Burbank, California, last week. The season-opening show, which aired yesterday, contained another surprise: the CoverGirl cosmetics company gave Henegar and Addison each cash gifts of $25,000. Publicists for Ellen’s show said CoverGirl provided the cash awards to the men "for sharing their story and for being a good example for the rest of us." DeGeneres and her guests actor Patrick Dempsey, singer Pink and U.S. Olympic gymnasts Gabby Douglas, McKayla Maroney and Kyla Ross also taped a light-hearted commercial for Quality Paint and Body, managed by Henegar.
