October 9

Just because:
I've always been a fan
of the Oxford* comma.

*also known as the Harvard comma.
A "serial" comma is placed just before
the coordinating conjunction (and, or, nor)
in a series of three or more terms.
English is the only language
that uses a serial comma.

"Invited to the bachelor party were two strippers,
Katie and Marcia."
vs.
"Invited to the bachelor party were two strippers,
Katie, and Marcia."

In the first instance Katie and Marcia were the two strippers.
In the second, Katie and Marcia
were the third and fourth guests.
Some grammarians obsess over this.

While I'm a fan, life is too short...
For me, the best thing is the opportunity
to use the above illustration,
which I do not believe has made it
into any published book of grammar.
More's the pity.
