Gay Prime Minister of Luxembourg
To Marry Belgian Architect Today

Luxembourg's openly gay Prime Minister, Xavier Bettel (right in photo), will marry Belgian architect Gauthier Destenay (left), his male partner, today, Friday May 15. Bettel and Destenay have been in a civil union since 2010, but the conservative Catholic-majority Duchy of Luxembourg did not legalize gay marriage until last year. Realizing the exploitative possibilities by the press, the couple turned down multiple requests from celebrity magazines to cover the event. Destenay, who occupies the official Prime Minister’s residence with Bettel, proposed to Xavier last summer.

Bettel became Luxembourg’s Prime Minister in 2013 at the age of forty, and it should be noted that Luxembourg also has a gay deputy Prime Minister, Etienne Schneider. Bettel has promised to be a modernizing force for Luxembourg and wants to cut the voting age to 16. Prior to becoming Prime Minister, Bettel had served as Mayor of Luxembourg City. He also holds the functions of Minister of State, Minister for Communications and the Media, and Minister of Worship.

Bettel is at present the only gay world leader, since the heads of government of Iceland and Belgium are now out of office. Henri, the Grand Duke of Luxembourg, is head of state, occupying the throne as a constitutional monarch. He officially designated Bettel as the formateur of the new government following the 2013 elections. Luxembourg, which borders France, Germany and Belgium, has about a half million residents and boasts the world’s second highest GDP per capita.
