The New Normal: Democrats vs. Republicans

The New Normal is an NBC comedy about Bryan (openly gay Andrew Rannells) and David (Justin Bartha), a Los Angeles gay male couple who have their first child with the help of a surrogate, who has a bigoted, narrow-minded grandmother, Jane Forrest (Ellen Barkin). The show premiered on September 11, 2012 after much controversy.

One Millions Moms, a socially conservative organization that first made waves challenging openly lesbian Ellen DeGeneres’ role as a spokesperson for JCPenney, protested The New Normal by saying, “NBC is using public airwaves to continue to subject families to the decay of morals and values and the sanctity of marriage in attempting to redefine marriage. These things are harmful to our society, and this program is damaging to our culture.” One Million Moms protested the show based on a two-line description of the plot line; because it had not yet premiered, no one had actually seen it.

In a similar vein, an NBC Mormon-church owned affiliate KSL-TV (Salt Lake City) announced in late August that their station would not air the show, which is kind of ironic, since The New Normal star Andrew Rannells starred on Broadway in the hugely successful musical, The Book of Mormon. Ellen Barkin tweeted this response: Shame on u @kslcom not airing @NBCTheNewNormal. So L&O SVU (rape & child murder) is ok? But loving gay couple having a baby is inappropriate?

But I digress. Back to those sexy tan lines.
