Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown: the Musical
American Idol season one runner-up Justin Guarini pretties up the cast of the new Lincoln Center Theater musical Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown as he makes his Broadway debut. The musical, based on Pedro Almodóvar's Academy Award-nominated 1988 film, opened at the Belasco Theater November 4 to mixed reviews (to put it charitably). Justin is in good company as he plays Carlos, the son of Iván and Lucía, who are portrayed by Brian Stokes Mitchell and Patti LuPone, respectively. Critics said kind things about Justin’s performance as Carlos, and friends who have seen the show say he was a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing production. Openly gay Almodóvar is the most successful and internationally known Spanish film maker of his generation, and he brought unknowns Antonio Banderas and Penelope Cruz to an international audience and subsequent fame. Forgive me for slighting über-sexy Ms. Cruz as I concentrate on Mr. Banderas.

Note to Mr. Banderas: chuck the sissy robe. Now where was I? Back to the tan lines.
